Ophthalmic optics is the science that deals with the functioning of the human eye. This health care profession deals with proper eye examination, proper diagnosis and proper treatment of eyes. This science deals with optical systems, the use of lenses and other optical aids, refractive error and its correction. An optometrist is a doctor of optometry (OD), not a medical doctor. He uses various vision therapies to correct eye abnormalities and may prescribe eye medicines. The duties of an optometrist include recognizing the ocular and visual symptoms of eye diseases, understanding the many problems affecting the eye, and referring patients to appropriate specialists for treatment.

Thus an optometrist diagnoses and treats problems related to the eyes. The optometrist fabricates the lenses according to the prescribed specifications and fits them according to the individual requirements. He hardens or softens the lenses using hi-tech machines and also polishes them. Optometrists are not allowed to perform surgery in India. That means he can do all other work related to eye treatment except eye surgery. An optometrist's job is to advise patients about eye care. He can prescribe contact lenses, exercises to correct eye muscles or squint, prescription for spectacles, etc. There is no doubt that it is a big challenge, so it has to keep itself updated continuously. Optometrists are required to provide frequent eye examinations, public health optometry as well as counseling services and help in correcting low vision.

They systematically diagnose patients' ailments and recommend referrals to appropriate specialists. Thus their role is that of a primary eye care provider. An optometrist can get a job as an assistant to an ophthalmologist in hospitals or in clinics. Apart from this, apart from working in a private optical setup, one can also start one's own clinic. By the way, ophthalmic optics is a science. It is a combination of physics and biology, because on the one hand anatomy and physiology of the eye is studied, and on the other hand physics subjects like optics, lenses and refractive index are also studied. It is a dynamic and challenging career that offers job flexibility, financial success and limitless opportunities, along with personal growth and social respect.

To pursue a career as an optometrist, it is necessary to pursue a Bachelor of Clinical Optometry course. To do this, the minimum age of the candidate is 17 years and it is necessary to pass 12th with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology and minimum 50% marks in English. For admission in this, the Centralized Joint Entrance Test 'ISET' has to be given, which has been recognized all over the country. In the first three years of this course, theoretical education is followed by one year internship for clinical and trade experience. In this, physical optics, knowledge of optical instruments, general anatomy, physiology, abnormalities and pathological conditions of the eye and methods of measuring and correcting visual impairment are explained.

Students are exposed to practical training in basic science, dispensing optics and clinical subjects as well as internships in various hospitals, specialty eye clinics, etc. Diploma course in optometry is also available. in this course
