Why Is This the National Science Day Celebrated?

National Science Day is celebrated in India on 28 February each year to mark the discovery of the Raman effect, by Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman. For his discovery, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.

APJ Abdul Kalam

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, born on October 15, 1931, is an Indian scientist who worked as an Aerospace engineer with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He also served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007.


Vikram Sarabhai 

Vikram Sarabhai was born on 12 August 1919, in the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat. He is considered as the Father of India's space programme. He was instrumental in the setting up of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).


Homi J. Bhabha

He was born on October 30, 1909, in Bombay, Homi Jehangir Bhabha played an important role in the Quantum Theory. Bhabha is generally acknowledged as the father of Indian nuclear power.


MGK Menon 

Mambillikalathil Govind Kumar Menon was born on August 28, 1928, in Mangalore. He was a physicist and policy maker from India. He had a prominent role in the development of science and technology in India over four decades.


CV Raman 

Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was born in Tiruchirapalli on November 7, 1888, he was the first Asian and first non-white to receive any Nobel Prize in science. He was the first to investigate the harmonic nature of the sound of the Indian drums such as the tabla and the mridangam.
